Minigame: The calibration board
This exercise helps you recognise how sustainability requirements and commitments differ in normative strength and how different levels of calibration are expressed in practice. Calibration manifests through word choices, for instance, “must” for obligations and “aim to” for aspirations.
Language examples per calibration level:
| Aspiration | Expectation | Obligation |
|---|---|---|
“The Supplier should aim to…” “The Supplier supports the goal of…” | “The Supplier is expected to…” “The Supplier should use reasonable efforts to…” | “The Supplier must…” “The Supplier shall ensure that…” |
Read the following commitments and move them each to the appropriate column on the Commitment calibration board:
The Supplier should make reasonable efforts to verify that subcontractors meet relevant standards.
The Supplier shall notify the Buyer within 24 hours of any serious incident affecting operations.
The Supplier strives to enhance its internal processes to better manage supply-chain risks.
The Supplier is expected to identify potential sustainability risks in its supply chain.
The Supplier is required to report any actual or suspected human-rights violation immediately.
The Supplier aims to improve the traceability of key raw materials over time.
